Minnesota Twins defeat Chicago White Sox 4-1 at Target Field – MLB Update
Minnesota Twins defeated Chicago White Sox 4-1 at Target Field in Minneapolis, Minnesota on Monday, June 25 in the opening game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Catcher Joe Mauer continued to impress the critics as he hit a sacrifice fly to right in the first inning to put the Twins on the board. Mauer is averaging .323 with the bat this season and he will be eager to lead his team to the playoffs.
Trevor Plouffe scored on a throwing error and Jamey Carroll earned an RBI single in the second to extend Twins’ lead to 3-0. Plouffe continued to put pressure on the White Sox and he finished the game with a sacrifice fly to right in the seventh.
Starting pitcher Francisco Liriano put up a solid show as he gave up just three singles, two walks and a double to win for the second time this season.
"We haven't scored a whole lot, but that's no excuse. You have to find ways to be better. We stayed in it, but Liriano was too good," said Chicago’s starting pitcher Jake Peavy.
"I had to bear down a few times and get my mind right, focus when I was on the field," said Kevin Youkilis after his first game with the White Sox. "Once I did that, I actually kind of had fun. It wasn't fun that we lost, but it was kind of enjoyable to
be around new teammates and a new environment."
The Twins showed great courage and fighting spirit in a game that was played on a very competitive note. With their win, they improved their record to 30-42 but the Twins will be hoping to continue their good form in their upcoming games to have any chance
of making it to the post season.
Chicago White Sox, on the other hand, have now lost six out of their last ten games. Although they are still sitting at the top of American League Central Division standings, the White Sox will have to work extremely hard to avoid losing their first place
on the table. The Twins will be looking to carry their winning momentum forward and continue with their competitive game-play.
