Minnesota Twins defeat Cleveland Indians 6-4 – MLB Update
Rene Tosoni homered in the 10th inning on Sunday, September 25 to guide the Minnesota Twins over the Cleveland Indians 6-4 at Progressive Field.
The win helped the Minnesota Twins avoid the four-game sweep.
Sunday’s win would not have come had it not been for tactically different moves devised by the team manager Ron Gardenhire. He opted for Tosoni to quickly replace Joe Benson. Placed in right-field, the rookie made use of it and hit Tony Sip.
“Benson took off," Gardenhire said. "Steve thought I had given the green light when I was actually scratching my chin. It's just fitting. Then he got thrown out, so I had to kind of ad-lib."
Gardenhire seemed wonderfully pleased with the strategy that worked out eventually. "I just wanted Trevor to bunt the first pitch before (Thome) got taken out," Gardenhire said. "He didn't, but I really wanted him to drop a bunt down on the first pitch just
to entertain ourselves."
The Twins who have now acquired Jim Thome have a lot to hear from the 41-year-old star. Thome, representing the Indians, has been crucial in almost all games.
Ben Revere started the game for Minnesota with a single to centre as Danny Valencia went for a sacrifice fly hit against Fausto Carmona. The early 2-0 lead could not, however, be maintained as Liam Hendriks was subject to a hit by Lonnie Chisenhall.
Chisenhall scored a two-run single to level the score for the Indians in the 4-hit first inning of Hendriks. Shelly Duncan homered to left in the third inning to make it 4-2 for the Indians while the Twins looked for opportunities to score.
Ben Revere succeeded in stealing a run in the fifth inning to bring the Cleveland Indians’ lead down to 4-3 while Trevor Plouffe homered to left centre to level the score. As the game was tied, the relief pitchers of both teams tried their level best to
contain the hitters of the respective teams.
However, things took a swift turn in the 10th inning when Rene Tosoni homered against Tony Sip to score the tiebreaking run. Long before Sip could settle, Chris Parmelee had another single to reinforce the lead for the Twins.
Joe Nathan came and pitched a scoreless ninth to wrap up the game with a 6-4 victory for the Minnesota Twins and to avoid the four-game sweep. The Twins put in a tremendous performance as they fought hard throughout the game. Minnesota was able to contain
the Indians’ offence as they took a much needed victory Cleveland. It will be interesting to see how the Twins carry their winning momentum forward in their next match-up.
