Minnesota Twins defeat Florida Marlins 9-0 – MLB Update
American League’s Minnesota Twins crushed National League’s Florida Marlins with a huge 9-0 margin in their Grapefruit League game at Hammond Stadium in Fort Myers, Florida on Monday, March 14.
The Twins, after trailing to Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday, took a dramatic turn and defeated the New York Yankees with a 9-2 margin in Tampa Bay. Scott Baker was the starter and winner, allowing one run on two hits, with one walk and two strike-outs in
4.0 innings. Twins moved their points table to 9-8 presenting the Marlins their 11th trounce in spring.
Pitcher Kevin Slowey repeated the same show for the spectators. Slowey threw four scoreless innings striking-out three while allowed just two hits. Slowey’s contribution made him suitable for the competing rotation spot with Scott Baker, as the Twins’ manager
Ron Gerdenhire provided some sign of his inclusion.
Kevin was making his second start of the spring. He was 13-6 with 4.45 ERA, allowing 172 hits with 29 walks and 116 strike-outs in 28 starts for the Twins last season.
"Slowey was really good, wrapping it around the zone, in and out," said Gardenhire. "We'll decide on who we think will be able to handle the bullpen role better than the other."
Twins’ hurlers were so impressive that they permitted only five combined hits. David Hughes allowed one in a single inning and Nick Blackburn received only two in three innings.
Marlins’ decision not to rely on their best performer Alex Sanabia for more than one inning resulted in some valuable runs that led them to defeat. Marlins utilised Brad Hand and Clay Hensley for four innings each but they could not perform according to
anticipation of skipper. Both consumed runs and failed in striking-out any batter.
Marlins only economical hurler was left-handed Dan Jennings who was successful in striking-out two batters. He permitted only one run on two hits but not reasonable to remove the damage done by the earlier pitchers.
Luke Hughes and Danny Valencia both posted one home-run each for the Twins. The Marlins’ batters were unable to even touch for a single in the later stages of the game.
Marlins will face Tampa Bay on Tuesday to clean the blemish of losing to them in spring. Anibal Sanchez will provide the hope as he squares off against the Rays.
The Twins managed to put in a tremendous effort as they comprehensively beat the Marlins. Minnesota was able to completely restrict the Marlins’ offence from scoring anything. The Marlins will be disappointed that their offence never really got going and
they struggled throughout the game. They will be looking to improve their performance in their next match-up.
