Minnesota Twins defeat Philadelphia Phillies 11-7 in series’ opener – MLB Update
Minnesota Twins defeated Philadelphia Phillies 11-7 at Target Field in Minneapolis, Minnesota on Tuesday, June 12 in the opening game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Both the Twins and the Phillies have struggled to make the most of available opportunities this season. Twins’ offence, in particular, has blown away a large number of scoring opportunities this year.
However, the hitters put up a reasonable performance and the pitching attack showed greater composure on Tuesday evening as the Twins improved their record to 25-35.
With a poor 12-18 record at Turner Fielder, winning matches at home has remained the biggest of all the Twins’ problems this season. Considering the season is nearing the half way mark, it will be miracle if the Twins make it to the playoffs from their current
situation.
"You have to have your whole lineup contributing and that's what we're getting right now, our whole lineup," Willingham said. "It can't be one or two guys every night. It's got to be the whole lineup up and down."
"We're making our hitting coach look pretty good right now," Revere said with a smile. "I owe that little kid dinner. He helped me out a little bit there."
"What can I say? It seems like it's hard for us to get it," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. "It's hard for us to put together a solid game."
Denard Span looked extremely comfortable on the plate as he hit a mighty home run to right in the first inning to score the first run for Minnesota.
Trevor Plouffe also joined the party as he homered to right in the second inning to put the Twins 3-0 ahead. Ben Revere had an RBI single to right and Joe Mauer singled to right in the second to extend Twins’ lead to 5-0 lead.
Credit should be given to Phillies’ offence for the way they fought. Not showing any signs of nerves, the Phillies reduced their opponents’ lead to 8-7 in the sixth. Josh Willingham homered to left centre and Jamey Carroll singled to centre in the seventh
to push the Phillies completely out of the contest.
