Minnesota Twins defeat Philadelphia Phillies 3-2 at Target Field - MLB News
Minnesota Twins defeated the Philadelphia Phillies by a tight 3-2 margin on Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at the Target Field.
The scoring got underway in the top of the third innings with Phillies’ Michael Young getting an RBI single. The Twins were able to get a lead in the bottom of the fourth courtesy of RBI doubles by Justin Morneau and Oswaldo Arcia.
The Phillies got even in the eighth innings with an RBI single by Ryan Howard. It appeared at this point that Twins may be headed to another extra innings game, something that has happened quite often these days for the Minnesota
ballclub.
However, Justin Morneau had other plans, as the first baseman was able to deliver the winning punch in the bottom of the eighth. He kept on fouling balls away until he was able to get a good connection and scored an RBI single
to help his team gain the match winning lead.
Justin felt that the team numbers with runners on bases were not very good and the team needed to improve. He was pleased that he got the hit that was needed, allowing his team to go ahead and eventually win the game without going
into the extra innings this time around.
"I think watching TV we saw the numbers scrolling across about how our numbers with runners in scoring position haven't been very good," Morneau said. "To get a big hit there and come in and shut it down, [because] we've been playing
a lot of long games and extra-inning games, is good for the team. It's good for everybody, and hopefully gets us rolling in the right direction."
Pitching was pretty good from both sides. Manager for the Twins Ron Gardenhire was all praise for P.J. Walters who only gave a single run away with six hits in over seven innings.
"Our starter was fantastic," Gardenhire said. "He threw the ball great. He gave us our first great opportunity. Unfortunately we couldn't hold it there.”
In the end of the day it was a good win for the Minnesota Twins. They are currently five games behind the .500 mark and it will be important for them to get there as quickly as possible with some more wins.
