Minnesota Twins defeat San Francisco Giants 9-2 – MLB Update
The Minnesota Twins’ bat completely crushed the San Francisco Giants’ starter Madison Bumgarner to take their club to a 9-2 win in the first of the three-game interleague series at AT&T Park on Tuesday, June 21.
It was a nightmare evening for Bumgarner as the Twins’ batters used their full swings on his juicy pitches and punched eight devastating runs right in the first inning. Joe Mauer led the game off with an infield line drive single followed by second run by
Michael Cuddyer. Then Delmon Young and Danny Valencia added an RBI single each while Luke Hughes took the lead to 6-0 with an RBI double.
Bumgarner allowed Luke Hughes to steal third base before taking Carl Pavano to make get first strike-out of the game. However, he again allowed an RBI double to Ben Revere before been replaced by Guillermo Mota in the first inning.
Madison had not had such a bad game ever in his career. It not only was a blow for him but it also astonished his manager Bruce Bochy, who was bewildered to see what is going on in the ground.
"That's a first for me to see it quite go like that," Giants’ manager Bruce Bochy said. "That's hard to do. I do not care if you are throwing batting practice out there.”
Mota managed to stop the Twins’ hard-hitting bat with his fast swinging pitches right after he replaced Bumgarner near the end of the first inning. Mota kept pitching for next four innings, remained scoreless and struck-out three batters, but also allowed
three hits.
The Twins’ starter Carl Pavano tossed an exceptional eight innings in which he allowed just two runs on nine hits including one homer in the seventh inning by the Giants’ wounded catcher Eli Whiteside. He allowed his second run in the eighth inning to first
baseman Emmanuel Burris.
"They were a little anxious," Pavano said. "They're trying to get the lead back. Eight runs is a big deficit. You tend to try to do too much, which worked in my favour."
He took two batters to achieve his fifth overall and fourth consecutive win in his fifteen starts in 2011. Alexi Casilla launched a dazzling 342-feet one-run homer and closer Jose Mijares tossed a perfect ninth inning to take his team into their 32nd win
of the season.
