Minnesota Twins downed by Atlanta Braves 5-1 at the Turner Field – MLB news
Minnesota Twins did not have the best of days on Monday, May 20, 2013 as they went down 5-1 against the Atlanta Braves at the Turner Field.
The loss came at the hands of some great hitting by the Braves in the first innings and some amazing pitching by Julio Teheran who never allowed the Twins batters to break free, almost throwing the perfect game.
The Braves went ahead with a Freddie Freeman getting an RBI single and Dan Uggla getting a three run-home run to the left field. The home team added one more run in the fourth innings.
The only time the Twins were able to score was in the bottom of the ninth when Josh Willingham went long, bringing an end to chances of a shutout for Julio. Trevor Plouffe scored a single next up before the pitcher left the game.
The 22-year-old said that he had been looking for the shutout all night long and had he not missed his mark on that one pitch, it could have been very much possible.
“I was excited to get my first shutout,” Teheran said. “I was trying to do what I did the whole game. I just missed that pitch.”
Fredi Gonzalez, the manager for the Braves was pleased by the youngster’s effort. He wanted to present Julio with a chance to experience a shutout and also to experience pitching in the ninth innings.
“I think it was good for him to experience that in the ninth inning,” Gonzalez said. “He had an extra day going into that start, and he'll have an extra day going out of that start, so we took that into consideration. And it was good for him to dig deep
down in the gas tank and see if he could do it, and by God, he gave it a good shot.”
Kevin Correia recorded his fourth loss of the season and now stands at an equal record of 4-4 win-loss. Cory Gearrin recorded his first save of the season for the Braves.
The game certainly did not go too well for the Twins who will now be looking to make a comeback. It will be crucial that their bats fire well during the series for better results.
