Minnesota Twins drop Matt Capps, others from team's roster - MLB News
After a major shakeup in their coaching staff, Minnesota Twins have now made some changes to their team roster as well. The latest move has seen seven players being removed from the team’s roster.
Matt Capps will be bought out for a $250,000 as the club is not willing to exercise the $6 million option that they have on him next year. The relief pitcher that is in his third season with the Twins has made 45 saves for the team during his stint. He has
been, however only pitched four innings since June 15 due to a shoulder injury.
The pitcher, who will now be a free agent, did not see the development as a shocking one. "After being hurt and everything like that, I kind of saw it coming," Capps said "I was glad I could finish the year healthy.” He was disappointed that he was unable
to play more games towards the end of the season.
He does expect that the Twins may be interested in having him back the next season on a fresh contract. "It's a new chapter in my career. We'll turn the page, see what happens this offseason," Capps said. "For all I know, the Twins are going to call back
and say, 'We didn't pick up the option, but we'd like you back for less than the option.'”
The Twins have moved three pitchers off the disabled list as well. These include pitchers Scott Baker, Carl Pavano and Cole De Vries. The Twins have a $9.25 million club option on Scott which they are unlikely to exercise. However, both parties have shown
interest in continuing their association and it is expected that they will negotiate a new contract.
The other removed from the roster include six pitchers Jeff Manship, Luis Perdomo, Esmerling Vasquez, Kyle Waldrop, P.J. Walters and outfielder Matt Carson. Carlos Gutierrez, the right-handed pitcher will now be moving to Chicago Cubs.
He was claimed off waivers by the Cubs. The 26-year-old has made 136 appearances in the Minor League system with the Minnesota Twins over spanned over five seasons with a 15-20 win-loss ratio. He made 10 appearances for Triple-A Rochester before like many
other Twins’ pitchers this year, his season too was cut short in mid June due to a shoulder injury.
The Minnesota Twins had a weak 2012 Major League season in which they ended up with 96 losses. The injuries, particularly to their pitchers played a major role in this. They currently have 35 players on the roster, thus they have some space available to
get more players on board.
Twins will be looking to make sure that they have a healthy roster for the next season and have as a few injuries as possible to give themselves a decent chance to improve their performance in 2013.
