Minnesota Twins edge Baltimore Orioles 6-4 at Target Field – MLB Update
Minnesota Twins edged the Baltimore Orioles 6-4 at Target Field in Minneapolis, Minnesota on Tuesday, July 17 in second game of their four match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Twins’ Manager Ron Gardenhire will be very happy to see his team finally playing to its potential. Minnesota hammered the Orioles 19-7 in the series opener, dominating their opponents in almost all aspects of the game.
Manager Ron Gardenhire commented on Joe Mauer’s performance and said, "It's kind of one of those, 'Oh well, it's Joe again' type things. We've seen that before. He's won a lot of batting titles doing that same thing. He can flat-out hit. The bottom line
is the guy can hit."
Using their home conditions to great effect, the Twins put up another fine show on Tuesday evening to take an impassable to 2-0 lead in the series. It will be interesting to see if they can continue their impressive form in the next two games to earn an
important series sweep against the struggling Orioles.
After Nick Markakis scored in the first inning for the Orioles, Jamey Carroll doubled to left in the fourth inning to bring the Twins back into the contest.
Ryan Doumit earned an RBI single to right in the fifth and Josh Willingham scored to reduce the deficit to 2-4. With momentum on their side, Gardenhire and company continued to put pressure on the Orioles’ rotation.
Brian Dozier, Ben Revere and Joe Mauer all rose to the occasion and the Twins came back from behind to clinch a decisive 6-4 lead in the seventh.
"It's great," Mauer said in a post game interview. "I love playing here. I love putting on this uniform. The most important thing is getting the win. If I can get some hits, that's great."
Starting pitcher Samuel Deduno bounced back from a shaky start to pitch 4.1 solid innings. He gave up six hits and four runs with five strike-outs.
Relief pitcher Jared Burton pitched the perfect ninth for his third save of the season and Alex Burnett was awarded with the win for pitching a one hitter.
