Minnesota Twins edge Kansas City Royals 10-8 in high scoring thriller – MLB Update
Minnesota Twins edged Kansas City Royals 10-8 in a high scoring thriller at Target Field in Minneapolis, Minnesota on Sunday, July 1 in the finale of their four match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Trevor Plouffe hit a mighty home-run in the second inning to break the deadlock and give the Twins an early 1-0 lead. The Royals responded fiercely, taking complete advantage of Twins’ unforced errors on the field to take a 5-1 lead.
Josh Willingham led Twins’ fight back as he hit a three run home-run to centre in the sixth inning to level the score 5-5. Plouffe continued to play aggressively, hitting his second home-run in the sixth and Drew Butera homered to left in the eighth inning
to give the Twins complete control of the situation. Brayan Pena, Eric Hosmer and Billy Butler made useful contributions for the Royals but Minnesota held on to their lead to clinch a superb victory.
"He's been there from Day One, he's been carrying the load for our baseball team an awful lot," manager Ron Gardenhire said. "I sure was hoping he would get a chance to play in an All-Star game. He's very deserving of it and he just added onto his numbers
today."
"The only thing I can say is I'm happy with the way my season's gone so far. Obviously, we want to keep winning as a team," Willingham said in a post game interview. "(Joe's) going to represent this team well."
After losing the series opener 4-3, the Twins showed great determination and mental strength to turn the tables on their rivals. Twins’ triple treat should do their confidence a world of good as they improved their record to 33-45.
Manager Ron Gardenhire will also be very satisfied with what he saw from his team in last three games of the series. Right now, the Twins are at the bottom of the American League Central Division standings table but things can change very quickly. It will
be interesting to see if Gardenhire and company can produce similar performances in their next series to gain some sort of momentum.
