Minnesota Twins edge Milwaukee Brewers 5-4 in series finale – MLB Update
Minnesota Twins edged Milwaukee Brewers 5-4 at Target Field in Minneapolis, Minnesota on Sunday, June 17 in the finale of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
The Twins showed great character, composure and fighting abilities in a game that turned out to be a nail biting thriller. Credit must be given to the Twins for using their home conditions to great effect. Milwaukee, who flattened their opponents in the earlier two games, was unable to come up with a winning formula this time.
In the longest game played at 2.5 year old Target field, the Twins handled the pressure absolutely superbly to give the home funs what they wanted to see. The Brewers led score 4-1 in the fifth inning and it seemed they were on their way to a memorable series sweep at Target Field but that did not turn out to be the case.
"I just wanted to throw strikes, try to get ahead, make my pitches and hopefully they'll put them in play at our guys," said starting pitcher Jeff Gray. "I was just trying to eat up as many innings as possible without giving up some runs and hopefully we can score one."
"I'm pretty stiff," Mauer said. "It's good timing for the off day tomorrow."
Ron Gardenhire and company came back from behind to snatch an unforgettable victory, breaking the tie in the fifteenth inning. Corey Hard hit a three run home run for the Brewers in the fifth inning to extend his side’s lead to 4-1. Jamey Carroll singled to centre and Ben Revere singled to left in the seventh to bring the Twins back into contest.
"That was probably my first walk-off since the minor leagues," Span said. "Definitely, a lot of fun."
"I was just trying to get us to dinner," Span said, smiling.
Joe Mauer also had a great time on the plate with an RBI single to centre in the seventh that levelled score at 4-4. However, the star of the show was Denard Span who drove in a winning run in the 15th innings, giving Minnesota a much needed victory.
