Minnesota Twins edge past Tampa Bay Rays 2-1 – MLB Spring Training
Minnesota Twins edged past Tampa Bay Rays 2-1 at the Charlotte Sports park in Port Charlotte, Florida on Monday, March 12 in their Grapefruit League encounter of the 2012 Major League Baseball Spring Training Sessions.
The Twins have looked in decent touch since the start of this spring. With six win 11 games, the manager will very pleased with what he has seen so far from his players. However, the real test lies ahead in the regular season when all MLB teams will play to their maximum strength.
Twins adopted a very aggressive approach during the contest and they handled the pressure brilliantly to secure another important win. Making the most of available opportunities, the Twins put their opponents under pressure right from the beginning. It will be interesting to see if they can continue their impressive form in the upcoming spring training games.
Rays, on the other hand, will be very disappointed with the outcome of the clash. It will not be wrong to say that Kyle Farnsworth’s unforced error at first base proved very costly for them. Despite putting up a valiant fight in later stages of the game, the Rays were unable to cross the finishing line. Having lost seven out of ten games this spring, the Rays will be looking to do some serious work on their game plan before the opening day.
"That's what we work on during spring training -- little comebackers like that," Farnsworth said. "It's embarrassing to miss that, but sometimes the slow ones like that are the worst ones because you have time to think about it."
"I'm definitely progressing the way I want to progress right now. I'm kind of mixing my pitches up a little bit more as we go," said Shields, a 16-game winner who finished third in last season's AL Cy Young Award balloting. "It was a good outing. Four innings, pretty solid."
James Shields put up another strong show to impress his managers and coaches as he allowed three hits, walked two and struck out two on his second spring appearance. He will be looking to continue his impressive run to earn a huge pay check at the end of the season.
