Minnesota Twins’ farm team coaching staff named - MLB News
The Minnesota Twins announced the coaching staff for the Triple-A Rochester on Saturday, November 17. The team maintained their manager Gene Glynn for the upcoming season and added hitting coach Tim Doherty with pitching coach Marty Mason in place of Tom
Brunansky and Bobby Cuellar.
Rochester Red Wings is a Triple-A affiliate of the Minnesota Twins in the Minor League, which plays in the International League and is located in Rochester, New York. The team got its affiliation with the Twins in 2003.
Gene Glynn has been associated to four Major League teams as a coach and was a pro scout for the Tampa Bay Rays from 2007 to 2011. Gene had a good season as a manager of the Red Wings in 2012 and the team had a 72-72 record. There was a marked improvement
in the performance during 2012, in which the team improved from a 53-91 losing record the previous year.
The Mankato State University graduate had a brief Minor League career as a second baseman in the Montreal Expos farm system. Glynn was signed as an undrafted free agent in 1979. He played there for seven seasons before turning to coaching and managing teams.
Some quarters are already suggesting that he could be the next manager for the Twins, especially if Gardenhire once again is unable to deliver the goods. The Twins have a history of promoting staff through the ranks of Minor Leagues to the Majors.
Tim Doherty was a staff member of the Red Sox, helped hitting Coach Dave Magadan mainly during 2012. His previous association was a 9-year-long stint with the Kansas City T-Bones. The team is a part of the American Association of Independent Baseball Professionals
and does not have an affiliation with Major League Baseball.
Marty Mason was the pitching coach for the Single-A Daytona in the Florida State league which is affiliated with the Chicago Cubs in 2012. He worked in the Cubs’ farm system for two years. Prior to that, Mason served 11-years as a bullpen coach with the
St. Louis Cardinals under the legendary manager Tony La Russa during his 25-year-long association with the Cardinals.
As a player, he played in the Minor League Systems of New York Yankees and St. Louis Cardinals between 1980 and 1986. Marty’s career as a pitching coach started in the Minor League in 1987 in the Cardinals’ farm system.
Rochester Red Wings showed progress under Gene Glynn in 2012. Even though there were 56 different players used by the team during the season, the club still improved. Around 23 of these players also had a chance to be a part of the Twins. By the sign of
things, Glynn seems to be an excellent choice for the manager and the coaching staff added with him is also expected to perform quite well.
