Minnesota Twins gamble with Mike Pelfrey in starting rotation- MLB Update
The starting rotation headaches for the Minnesota Twins appear to be coming to an end. The ball club, which had just one pitcher pencilled in for the starting rotation for 2013 a couple weeks back, now has four names.
The deal will go through after the results of Mike’s physical are received. The Twins so far have kept quiet about the whole affair. The ball club is known to take their chances with pitcher who may be at risk of being injured.
Terry Ryan, the general manager of the Twins had recently said that the ball club was in contact with anyone who could be a potential starting pitcher. The team is also considering all possible options, not leaving anyone out.
"If someone is out there that we like, we have to consider it," Ryan said. “We continue to talk to quite a few guys, and we have been connected to quite a few who have been out there.”
Mike Pelfrey is the latest name to join Scott Diamond, Vance Worley and Kevin Correia on the starting rotation. He is said to be making $4 million for a single-year deal with the Minnesota Twins. There will be incentives involved as well, worth $1.5 million
on performance basis.
Pelfrey owns a 50-54 win-loss record in the Majors with a 4.36 career ERA. His best career year has so far been 2010 where he posted a 15-9 winning record with a 3.66 ERA.
Mike missed most of the 2012 season after a Tommy John Surgery which took place in early May. He only pitched in three games as a starting pitcher, posting a 2.29 ERA.
It would not be surprising if the Twins after signing Mike Pelfrey look to add another pitcher to their ranks. They will certainly also consider candidates for a spot on the starting rotation internally.
It would be a useful stint for Mike who needs to show his game after returning from a surgery and missing the 2012 season. Some teams might be skeptic in signing a player such as him because of that factor and his good performance in the 2013 season can
make it a win-win situation for both parties.
