Minnesota Twins humiliated by Chicago Cubs 2-8 – MLB Update
Minnesota Twins were humiliated by Chicago Cubs 2-8 at Target Field in Minneapolis, Minnesota on Sunday, June 10 in final game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Twins’ manager Ron Gardenhire and his men will be extremely disappointed with their performance on Sunday evening.
After winning comprehensively in the opening two games, Minnesota were hoping to secure a rare series sweep against Chicago Cubs but that did not turn out to be the case.
Cubs took complete advantage of their opponents’ unforced errors on the field, scoring three runs in the sixth and three in the eighth.
Alfonso Soriano once again showed how valuable he is to the Cubs as he doubled to deep left centre to break the deadlock.
David DeJesus grounded out to second and Starlin Castro scored in the sixth to put the Cubs 3-0 ahead.
Joe Mather, Reed Johnson and Darwin Barney also made useful contributions to put the Cubs in a commanding 8-0 position.
For the Twins, Ryan Doumit hit a sacrifice fly to left and Jamey Carroll doubled to right in the ninth inning to make the score 2-8 but the Cubs held on to their lead with ease to complete a comprehensive victory.
"Whether it's making a start, getting in the lineup or coming out of the 'pen, you just have to try and make the most of those opportunities," Dempster said.
"It's good he's going back to the National League, I guess, after a performance like that," said Joe Mauer.
"We scored some runs for him the second time in a row," Cubs manager Dale Sveum said. "That was good. He was pretty dominant again. It's been pretty much a phenomenal run he's had."
"Assortment of pitches," said Gardenhire in a post game interview. "We couldn't even figure out what one of 'em was. Everybody kept asking."
Cubs’ starting pitcher Ryan Dempster was absolutely unstoppable as he pitched eight shutout innings to win for the second time this season.
His counterpart from the Twins, Francisco Liriano gave up four runs and four hits in just over five innings.
