Minnesota Twins humiliated by Pittsburgh Pirates 6-17 – MLB Spring Training
Minnesota Twins were humiliated by Pittsburgh Pirates 6-17 at the Hammond Stadium in Fort Myers, Florida on March 15 in their Grapefruit League clash of the 2012 Major League Baseball Spring Training Session. The Twins will be very disappointed with the outcome of the game. The Pirates are considered one of the weakest teams in MLB. They had an ordinary 4-7 win-loss prior to the game. Beaten by the Pirates, the Twins will certainly not be pleased with what they managed to achieve during the contest.
Starter Terry Doyle, who played Double A and Class A last season, paid the ultimate price for his unforced errors as he went for eight runs and seven hits. Doyle was hoping to break into the pitching rotation by putting up a solid show but his outing proved to be a disaster on Thursday. He has now allowed 10 runs and 15 hits in just over five innings this spring.
"I just couldn't locate a fastball," Doyle said.
For Pirates, Andrew McCutchen was the star of the show as he doubled and score three times in the first inning. Garrett Jones and Alex Presley also had home runs, double and single to batter Tigers’ pitching lineup. Clint Hurdle and his men looked extremely confident after securing a comfortable 17-6 win over the Twins.
"We brought the lumber today. That was pretty much it," McCutchen said. "We swung it. That's about all that went into it. People start hitting, and next thing you know, it's just a domino effect."
"I think a lot of guys have matured as hitters and learned from last year, made improvements and adjustments to make us better," Jones said. "We have the talent to hit well and to be a great team. It's just a matter of putting it all together and doing it during the games."
Twins’ Manager Ron Gardenhire and his men will have to take a second look at their strategies to gain some kind of momentum before the start of 2012 regular season. It will be interesting to see if they can bounce back from a demoralizing defeat.
