Minnesota Twins in no hurry of leaving Manager Ron Gardenhire out of their plans - MLB News
When it comes to chopping and changing in sports, Minnesota Twins are not the team who take the modern approach. They follow the good old fashioned ways where results matter but are not all that matters. They like to keep their people around.
This can be observed by the fact that the team has only had three general managers and two managers in the last 27 years. That is quite a consistent show and there have been ups and downs along the way.
This kind of consistency cannot be found anywhere else in professional sports in general and baseball in particular where decisions are guided by the numbers as there is little consideration of anything else.
Ron is in his 12th season as the manager of the Twins. Despite the long association and a variety of results, there seems to be no love lost between the manager and the Twins’ organisation.
Twins’ general manager Terry Ryan was quite clear that he has no qualms about Ron continuing the job and he is certainly not a lame duck in the eyes of the club.
"I expect Ron to be on this job for a long time," Terry Ryan told Yahoo! Sports. "I don't consider it lame duck at all."
Seven of the eleven completed seasons under Gardenhire have been winning ones and the manager has an overall .523 winning percentage with a 940-859 win-loss record. The manager has lead Twins to six post-season appearances during this period.
Terry Ryan also admits that at some point in time, the change becomes a must. That is the nature of the beast. He, however, hopes that it is not that time at the moment.
"Things have changed in the industry," Ryan said. "We're trying to be stable and have continuity, and almost all the people we've had for years are still here. But there does come a point where change is necessary. I hope that's not now."
Ron Gardenhire himself knows that at some point in time, the ballclub may part ways. He believes that should that time come, he will not be having any issues with it and will not have any ill feelings. His job is to give it his best and that is just about
it.
"If we're doing everything we can do, I'm doing my job, and if that means when we don't win they feel like they need to go a different direction, that's their ballclub. I totally understand. I'd have no grudge whatsoever,” Gardenhire said.
There have been suggestions that 2013 may be his last season as the manager of the Twins’. It is obviously something that we will know when the season draws to a close. However, by the look of things, the Twins seem to be in no hurry to execute any such
plans.
