Minnesota Twins look for more pitching depth after signing Kevin Correia- MLB News
The Minnesota Twins’ hunt for free agent pitcher appears to be far from over at the moment. Despite of unconfirmed rumours that a deal with starting pitcher Kevin Correia is all but sealed, the Twins are giving indications that more such signings could be
on the way.
Pitching was high on the Winter Meetings agenda for the ball club and still is the top priority. There are some good names still available in the free agent market including right-handed pitcher Brett Myers, and left-handed pitchers John Lannan and Joe Saunders.
Twins’ general manager Terry Ryan expects the free agent market to heat up soon.
"As we approach Christmas, most teams like to know where they sit," Ryan said. "We are starting to approach that area."
The Minnesota Twins had a hard time in the pitching department in the 2012 season with the team finishing with a 66-96 losing record. The team had to employ 12 different starting pitchers in the last season due to injuries and poor performance.
There has been a steady build up in the pitching stock for the Twins. They have recently acquired Washington Nationals’ top pitching prospect Alex Meyer for centre fielder Denard Span. Similarly, they traded another centre fielder in shape of Ben Revere
to the Philadelphia Phillies and acquired pitcher Trevor May and Vance Worley.
Terry Ryan is also mindful of the situation and knows that the team will need various options in the upcoming 2013 season.
"We've got numbers." Ryan said. "It's just a matter of who is going to emerge. Some guys will be injured. Some will fall by the wayside. Some won't be ready. But we have to have numbers."
For now, Scott Diamond is certainly going to be on the opening rotation. Vance Worley is also expected to get a spot too. Once the deal is confirmed, Kevin Correia should also be another automatic selection. Correia has a reasonable record in the Majors,
posting a 60-65 win-loss record and an ERA of 4.54. His numbers have been good in the last four seasons and he has posted a 46-43 winning record.
The Twins recently also signed Scott Elarton for a Minor League stint. The 36-year-old has played in the Majors for 10 seasons and made his last appearance in the 2008 season for the Cleveland Indians. He has a 56-61 career record with a 5.29 ERA. Although
it is unlikely, the Twins may add him to the mix of things at some point in time if they are in need of pitchers during the season.
It appears that the Twins will look to add more arms to the pitching unit even after they sign Kevin Correia. The team is looking for a stable rotation and it will be crucial to their hunt for success in the 2013 season.
