Minnesota Twins lose to Baltimore Orioles 3-4 - MLB Update
Minnesota Twins were beaten by the Baltimore Orioles 3-4 at Target Field in Minneapolis, Minnesota on Thursday, July 19 in the finale of their four match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
In some ways, it was a huge win for Buck Showalter and company, who were struggling to achieve their desired results after the All Star Break. The Twins had prevailed in both the first two games of the series in an impressive fashion.
With home conditions working in their favour, they had an excellent chance to wrap up a superb series win but the Orioles were also determined to avoid series defeat.
"The way they thumped us around, they were really swinging the bats well the first two games," manager Buck Showalter said in a post game interview. "That's a pretty tough lineup to go through. It's frustrating because we had some chances to really open
it up some, with a lot of runners out there. It's kind of crazy how the game is because it kind of revolves around a flare that Mark threw out there in center field."
Showing great fighting skills, Baltimore held off their opponents on Thursday, which also safeguarded their second place on the American League East Division standings table.
Josh Willingham, once again, put up a decent show with the bat. His RBI single to left in the first inning allowed Ben Revere to score the first run for the Twins.
Trevor Plouffe also made a useful contribution as he doubled to left to extend Twins’ lead to 2-0. Chris Davis hit a solo home-run in the second to bring Baltimore back into the contest but the Twins restored their two run lead almost immediately, thanks
to a sacrifice fly hit right from second baseman Alexi Casilla.
Nick Markakis and Mark Reynolds handled their nerves absolutely brilliantly under pressure to help the Orioles comeback from behind to snatch a memorable win.
Twins’ starting pitcher Cole De Vries pitched six solid innings, allowing just a run with five strike-outs but he was still unable to take his side over the winning line. Orioles’ starter Wei Yin Chen, on the other hand, pitched extremely effectively for
his eighth win of the season.
