Minnesota Twins lose to New York Yankees 3-6 in series opener – MLB Update
Minnesota Twins were beaten by the inform New York Yankees 3-6 at Target Field, Minneapolis, Minnesota on Monday, September 24 in the opening game of their three match series.
Manager Ron Gardenhire will be extremely disappointed with what he saw from his men on Monday evening. After annihilating the Detroit Tigers in their previous series, the Twins were looking to get off to a decent start against New York but that did not turn
out to be the case.
Twins will be looking to learn from their mistakes to turn the tables on their opponents in Game 2 to keep the series alive. The fans will also be hoping to see what the Twins are made of in these closing stages of the game. A series win against the likes
of the Yankees will certainly boost Twins’ confidence levels.
Yankees, on the other hand, continued their impressive winnings streak to claim a large game and a half gap at the top of American League East Division standings table.
With eight wins in their last ten games, Joe Girardi and company have certainly improved their game-play considerably.
Robinson Cano put Yankees on the board in the first inning as he grounded out to shortstop. Nick Swisher, Curtis Granderson, Raul Ibanez and Eric Chavez hit back-to-back home-runs to help Yankees establish complete control over the contest.
Starting pitcher Andy Pettitte also played a key role in deciding the outcome of the game as he pitched six shut-out innings while striking-out seven Twins’ batters.
"I love this guy. There's nothing that fazes him," Swisher said of starter Andy Pettitte. "You can only just look at that and be like, 'Man, I want to be like that.'"
"It's a good lineup. There's no breaks in it. There's no breathers," said Twins’ starter Liam Hendriks, who gave up eight runs in just over six innings to take his eighth loss of the year.
For the Twins, shortstop Pedro Florimon smacked a solo home-run in the eighth and Chris Parmelee tripled to deep centre in the ninth but Yankees had no trouble in holding on to their four run lead.
