Minnesota Twins lose to Oakland Athletics 1-5 – MLB Update
Minnesota Twins lost to the Oakland Athletics 1-5 at O.co Coliseum in Oakland, California on Wednesday, August 22 in the finale of their three match series.
Oakland’s starting pitcher Tommy Milone put up a power show on Wednesday to make quick work of Twins’ battling line-up. In a display of complete dominance, Milone showed just what he is capable of as he struck-out five batters in eight sharp innings.
Allowing just one run on two hits, he kept Minnesota on the defensive throughout the contest to grab his tenth win of the season.
"Milone did the rest. He shut us down and went deep into the game," Twins’ manager Ron Gardenhire said.
"Typically, you don't win games making four errors," manager Bob Melvin said. "The reason we did come back is Milone."
Relief pitcher Ryan Cook gave up just a hit in the ninth to ensure the Athletics reach home without any trouble.
Josh Reddick singled to right in the first inning to put the A’s on the board. Twins responded immediately with catcher Drew Butera earning an RBI groundout to shortstop in the second to level the score 1-1.
Yoenis Cespedes singled to left centre in the third to help Oakland reclaim the lead. However, the star of the show was Coco Crisp who drove in crucial runs to lift his team to a much needed victory. Coco’s fans and team-mates gave him standing ovation after
he homered to left centre in the seventh.
"I felt like Cal Ripken over there with so many batting stances," Crisp said.
Twins’ starter Liam Hendriks had another poor outing as he took his sixth straight loss of the season. Overall, Hendriks gave up four runs and six hits in five innings.
"I wasn't given a lead and trying to blow it," Hendriks said. "We had some good at bats against Milone. It was just one of those days where I had to keep us in the game. It's unfortunate I only went five."
Twins’ Manager Ron Gardenhire will be disappointed with the outcome of the series, especially after hammering the A’s in the series opener.
