Minnesota Twins lose to Philadelphia Phillies 8-9 – MLB Update
Minnesota Twins lost to Philadelphia Phillies 8-9 in a thrilling encounter at Target Field in Minneapolis, Minnesota on Wednesday, June 13 in the second game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Ron Gardenhire and company had the better of their opponents in the opening game 11-7 to take a crucial 1-0 series lead. However, on Wednesday evening, the Phillies adopted a very aggressive approach to establish complete control over the contest.
Making the most of scoring opportunities, the Phillies scored six runs in the first inning to dent the Twins’ confidence levels. Jim Thome had an RBI single to right centre and John Mayberry displayed some top quality hitting skills as he hit a three run
home run in the first inning to put his side in a commanding position at 6-0.
"Any time you clear the center-field backdrop, it means a lot," Thome said, smiling. "It's special."
"I'm getting a chance to play every day. It's been a lot of fun," Thome said.
"I don't know how we're going to get him in there," manager Charlie Manuel said in a post game interview.
"I feel like it comes and goes. I definitely have innings where things are working really well and I'm hitting my spots, and all of a sudden an inning comes and I can't hit a spot to save a life," Cole Hamels said.
"I'm not concerned," he said. "I'm definitely frustrated."
Trevor Plouffe helped the Twins gain some sort of momentum with a solo home run to left in the second inning but the Phillies continued their assault. Mayberry doubled to left in the third and Thome homered to centre in the fourth to take Phillies’ lead
beyond Minnesota’s reach.
Josh Willingham had an excellent time on the plate. He hit a mighty home run in the sixth inning to keep his side’s hopes alive. Hunter Pence and Carlos Ruiz ended with three hits each as the Phillies held on to their lead to secure an important win. Twins’
fans will be expecting their team to deliver the goods in the finale.
