Minnesota Twins lose to Seattle Mariners 4-5 – MLB Update
Minnesota Twins lost to the Seattle Mariners 4-5 in a thrilling encounter at Target Field in Minneapolis, Minnesota on Thursday, August 30 in the finale of their four match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
With their win on Thursday, Seattle also completed an emphatic series victory. After hammering Mariners 10-0 in Game 2, the Twins had an excellent chance to level the series and restore some of their lost pride but that did not turn out to be the case.
Both teams put up a solid fight but Seattle showed great determination to prevail. Although Mariners have improved their game-play significantly after the All Star Break, they are at the bottom of the American League West Division standings table.
"They've gained a great deal of experience this year," Manager Eric Wedge said. "We've had a lot of tough games, a lot of tight games, very similar to today. Their heartbeat's a lot better. They're much more experienced and they're doing a lot better job
in step-up opportunities."
Twins are also placed last on the AL Central Division standings and it will be interesting to see if they can learn from their mistakes to turn things around in the next season.
Starting pitcher Brian Duensing took his tenth loss of the season after he gave up four hits and four runs in just five innings. Kyle Waldrop, Jared Burton and Glen Perkins combined to pitch three scoreless innings but Mariners were too hot to handle on
Thursday.
"Everybody's just kind of feeding off each other," Seattle’s starter Beavan said. "Everybody wants to get better and is willing to put in the extra effort and the work. ... You're starting to see that. Guys are buying into that way of playing.”
"We just took the momentum and ran with it," Beavan said.
Second baseman Alexi Casilla singled to left in the first inning to put Twins on the board. Justin Morneau hit a sacrifice fly to centre and Josh Willingham hit a two run home-run to left in the eighth but Mariners held on to their one lead to complete a
deserving victory.
