Minnesota Twins may sign free agent pitcher Brett Myers - MLB News
The Minnesota Twins are on the lookout for good quality pitchers. They are looking to no leave any stone unturned in this search and free agent Brett Myers could be on the list for the Twins.
Myers, who has been an opening pitcher mostly through his 10-year-long Major League career, played the role of a relief pitcher in 2012 for the Chicago White Sox and the Houston Astros. It was not his best year as he had a 3-8 losing record posting a 3.31
ERA in a total of 70 games.
He currently has an 87-93 career record with an ERA of 4.20 with over 1367 strike-outs. The right-handed pitcher has also made 40 saves in the closer’s role.
Brett’s agent Craig Landis confirmed that the Twins have expressed interest in his client. He did not speculate if formal negotiations were underway, or if there was a chance of an agreement between the two parties anytime soon.
"They're interested, or perhaps even very interested," Landis said. "And that's about as far as we are right now."
Brett could be a good fit for the Twins. The 32-year-old is experienced and can lead the Twins rotation in 2013 and he will most likely be reasonably priced. Currently Scott Diamond appears to be the only one sure of a spot in the Twins pitching rotation
next year.
Terry Ryan, the Twins’ general manager is quite clear about what his club is after. They need good pitchers and they will be looking at all possible options. He said that the club has been in contact with just about every option that was there, though he
did not give any specific names.
"I'm not going to get into every guy we've contacted. We've touched base with most of the pitchers on the market," Ryan said.
The pitcher started the year with the Houston Astros with whom he has been pitching since 2010. His original deal with the ball club was for $5.1 million in 2010 which was extended for two years for a price of $23 million. He was traded to the Chicago White
Sox in the later part of July 2012.
Myers agent Craig Landis also suggested that although his client is more interested in the role of a starting pitcher, he would not be ruling out a stint in the bullpen if a good offer came along.
"He's pretty much focused on finding a starting job," Landis said. "If we did a multiyear deal, and somebody wants to put him in the bullpen, he's done that twice before."
It will be interesting to see if the Twins will eventually be taking a shot at adding Brett Myers to their pitching rotation for the next season. With his experience, Brett can be useful for any ball club as a starting pitcher or a reliever.
