Minnesota Twins send Denard Span to Washington Nationals – MLB Update
Different reports are coming in the media that Minnesota Twins have taken a bold initiative of trading centre fielder Denard Span to the Washington Nationals.
“He's going to bring a dimension to the club that we haven't had before, a fast-moving, exciting guy that makes contact and moves the guy around and can fly around the field,” general manager Mike Rizzo said as he explained in the media.
Rizzo added with more detail, “It gives us some options in dealing with our roster. He's a terrific, young center fielder, But we felt for his long-term development and his career path that we wanted to move him out of a taxing position of center field, both mentally taxing and physically taxing. We've accomplished that. I think his best skillset is farther down, in a run-producing type of spot."
Later it has been confirmed that both sides have officially announced their latest deal which involved Minor League pitcher Alex Meyer and four-time Major League professional Span.
Before this trade many rumours hit the media that Span is likely to be traded soon but to a different franchise. However, now this deal has been signed by both franchises.
Some say it was expected that Span will be traded as the Twins wanted a potential pitcher after their 2012 Major League Baseball campaign which brought them humiliation.
Twins dire pitching led them to bitter disappointment and as soon as the season was ended, the Minnesota management considered installing a young pitcher quickly who will be given the responsibility to lead the franchise into more consistent seasons ahead.
Span, before his trade, he averaged .283 hitting average along with four homers, 41 RBIs and .342 OBP. His career .284 hitting average along with 23 homers, 230 RBIs and .357 OBP also tells an interesting fact that he has been a quite consistent campaigner for the past four years.
Many say his trade will benefit the Nationals who acquired him. Though Nationals’ outfield is crowded with many big players but still Span will create his impact and ultimately it will give more stability to the Nationals in the coming years.
