Minnesota Twins stun Chicago Cubs 8-7 – MLB Update
Minnesota Twins showed great character and composure on the field as they stunned Chicago Cubs 8-7 at Target Field in Minneapolis, Minnesota on Friday, June 8 in the opening game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
The win will be of great importance for the Twins who have been working hard on some of the weaker areas of their game play. Both teams displayed some top quality baseball skills in a game that was played on a very fighting note. The Cubs took complete advantage
of Twins’ unforced errors early on to take 2-0 lead in the first inning.
Darin Mastroianni stole a single to left centre in the second inning to score the first run for the Twins.
Trevor Plouffe, once again, showed just how valuable he is for the Twins as he homered to left centre in the fourth inning to level score at 2-2.
The Cubs took a crucial 5-2 lead in the fifth inning, thanks to a mighty home run by Starlin Castro but the Twins gave an immediate response. Jamey Carroll had an RBI double to right in the fifth and Brian Dozier singled to right centre as Minnesota reduced
their opponents’ lead to just 5-4.
"Winning brings confidence in everybody," Willingham said. "We've been winning more lately, so everybody's more confident. I don't think we ever get down or feel like we're out of a game when we get down a few runs early."
"Willie just seems to have a flair for being up late in the game," Mastroianni said.
"I knew they brought an extra guy in the infield," Willingham said. "I wasn't paying attention to where they were. I was just trying to hit the ball somewhere."
Ryan Doumit homered to left centre in the sixth inning to put the Twins 6-5 ahead for the first time. Alfonso Soriano added a two run home run in the eighth as the Cubs became the favourites with a 7-6 lead. However, Justin Morneau and Josh Willingham produced
match winning performances in the bottom of the ninth and the tenth and the Twins secured a sensational 8-7 win.
