Minnesota Twins thrash New York Yankees 5-1 – MLB Spring Training
Minnesota Twins thrashed New York Yankees 5-1 at the Hammond Stadium in Fort Myers, Florida on Sunday, March 11 in their Grapefruit League clash of the 2012 Major League Baseball Spring Training.
The Twins have looked in decent touch since the start of 2012 Spring Training sessions. With a 5-5 win-loss record, it seems the Twins are on the right track. New York Yankees, on the other hand, will be very disappointed with the outcome of the game. Brian Cashman’s side made too many unforced errors to let the Twins take complete control over the contest.
Danny Valencia and Joe Benson displayed some high quality hitting skills as they both hit solo home-runs and Mike Holliman earned a three run drive to let the Twins secure a comfortable win. Phil Hughes became a strong candidate for the available starting spot in Yankees’ pitching rotation after he allowed only one hit in three scoreless innings, striking-out one batter.
"It makes it all the more worthwhile, that's for sure," Valencia said. "You don't want to feel like you're out there taking a hundred swings with blisters all over your hands for nothing."
"I thought he had everything today," Girardi said. "I thought his fastball location was much better. I thought he threw some good changeups. Pleased, very pleased."
"It's like saying you're going for a job interview and the first five minutes don't count," Hughes said. "Obviously, you're still going to be judged on the early results. I still want to come out early and show something."
The Yankees have looked a bit out of sorts since the start of spring season. Based on their 4-5 win-loss record, the Yankees will have to do a lot of hard to get things back on track. The fans have also looked very disappointed at some of the results their team has achieved.
Spending a considerable amount of money, the Yankees made some key moves during the offseason to power their pitching line up. With the likes of Michael Pineda, Ivan Nova and Phil Hughes, the bullpen is looking stronger than ever before. However, for Yankees it is all about making the right hitting and pitching combinations before the start of 2012 regular season.
