Minnesota Twins trade Ben Revere to Phillies, acquire pitchers Trevor May, Vance Worley - MLB News
The Minnesota Twins were quite clear about adding pitchers to their roster went they went to Nashville for Winter Meetings and they have stuck to the plan. The Twins traded their centre fielder Ben Revere to the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange of right-handed
pitchers Trevor May and Vance Worley.
Terry Ryan, the general manager for the Twins said that the team had to move some of its players in order to add some pitching arms. The Twins had earlier traded Denard Span, another centre fielder to the Washington Nationals and in return received a top
pitching prospect from them in the shape of Alex Meyer.
"The only way we were going to get pitching was to make a little bit of a drastic move, whether or not you want to say it's drastic," Twins’ general manager Terry Ryan said. "It is a risk. I understand that. But to get pitching, you're going to have to do
something. You can say the same thing about the trade for Denard."
Phillies will be pleased with the arrival of Revere as they desperately needed a quality centre fielder. Ben has been excellent in the field and his bat is also blazing. He had a .294 batting average in 2012 and a .333 on-base percentage. He produced 150
hits in the season including 19 extra base hits and a total of 32 RBI’s.
Trevor might spend the 2012 season with the Double-A associate of the Philadelphia Phillies, the Reading Phillies. The 23-year-old had a 10-13 win-loss record with an ERA of 4.87, which was higher than his career ERA of 3.92. He was ranked as the Number
two prospect for the Phillies by the MLB.com.
Vance Worley is a good catch for the Twins. His 2012 season was not his best, where he posted a 4.20 ERA with a 6-9 record. The 25-year-old had an injured elbow, having bone chips removed in September and is expected to be fit in time for Spring Training.
His 2011 season, also his rookie year, was quiet outstanding. Posting a 3.01 ERA, he had an 11-3 winning record. He has been given the seal of approval by Terry Ryan who believes that Worley is a competitor.
"He's got enough velocity," Ryan said. "He's got a slider, pitch ability. He's a competitor."
In the centre fielder spot, the Twins have a couple of Minor League options including Joe Benson and Aaron Hicks who can take the spot. They also have in their ranks Darin Mastroianni, who is likely to take the spot on Opening Day.
The Minnesota Twins were quite certain before the Winter Meetings that it was the pitchers they were looking to add to their roster and they have done just that. One hopes that the move will pay off for the Minnesota ball club.
