Minnesota Twins upset Chicago White Sox 7-6 in series opener – MLB Update
Minnesota Twins secured a narrow 7-6 win over the American League Central Division leaders Chicago White Sox at Target Field in Minneapolis, Minnesota on Monday, July 30 in the first game of their three match series.
"These guys are in first place in our division and we took a pretty good beating against them," Twins’ manager Ron Gardenhire said. "It was fun tonight. Guys were into it. We fought hard."
The Twins made the most of available opportunities on Monday evening to extend their impressive winning streak to four games. After the White Sox had taken an early 4-0 lead, Joe Mauer singled to left to put Minnesota on the board.
Josh Willingham also made his presence felt as he singled to left in the first and Ben Revere scored to reduce Chicago’s lead to 2-4.
"I made the catch, and I think the fans appreciated it more once they saw the replay," said Denard Span who took a stunning catch in the deep. "Just for them to clap and go as loud as they did for that amount of time -- that was pretty special."
Ryan Doumit grounded into fielder’s choice to second and Danny Valencia singled to centre to cap a four run first inning for the Twins. With momentum on their side, the Twins continued to put pressure on their opponents.
Doumit’s RBI single to centre in the third to put the Twins 5-4 ahead for the first time. However, it was Jamey Carroll who led his side to a deserving triumph as he hit a tie breaking run in the bottom of the ninth to wrap up a stunning Twins’ victory.
"We hit a lot of balls hard. It didn't happen," Chicago manager Robin Ventura said in an interview.
Relief pitcher Glen Perkins gave up just a hit in the ninth for his second win of the season. Starting pitcher Cole De Vries bounced back strongly from a shaky start. He gave up five runs and seven hits in five innings. His counterpart from Chicago, Jose
Quintana gave up six runs and ten hits in seven innings.
The Twins will be happy with their performance as they managed to battle it out with the White Sox and take a decent victory in the end.
