Minnesota Twins wait for the free agent market to open up in Nashville - MLB Update
The Minnesota Twins are in no rush to grab free agents and are waiting for the market to open up a little. Big names like Anibal Sanchez and Zack Greinke are yet to be signed and once they are bagged, the signings are expected to start flowing.
Terry Ryan, the general manager for the Twins knows all about the process. "It usually happens that way," Ryan said. "The upper-tier guys -- as soon as they go it starts to take some shape and some form. And I suspect that's going to happen fairly soon."
The Twins have been associated with a number of free agents and have held talks mainly with pitchers. They have also discussed potential trade possibilities with some of the other clubs.
"We've had more discussions," Terry said. "We've had more dialogue. We've had more exchanges with various guys. But whether or not it comes to the finality of bringing a guy in we'll see."
They are still in the hunt for a third baseman as well. A deal with Jack Hannahan is possible but it is rumoured that the Twins are offering a Minor League deal to him whereas he has received a Major League deal offer from elsewhere.
The club is not looking for expensive players and has ruled out adding pitchers like Zack Greinke to their line-up. The payroll last season for the Minnesota ball club sat around $100 million. Ryan said that the amount this year can be similar depending
on what sort of players they eventually have.
"It's fluid," Ryan said. "I don't have any problems with where we're at." The club currently has Justin Morneau and Joe Mauer on their roster, both earning a combined $37 million in salary. Terry said that the Twins do not want to be spending a major chunk
of the total payroll on four to five players.
It seems that the wait-and-see policy by the Minnesota Twins will continue and they will only get into action when free agents look to grab deals before it is too late. It will be interesting to see if their patience pays off.
