Minnesota Vikings GM Rick Spielman says calls asking for draft trade increasing - NFL News
The Minnesota Vikings have the number three overall pick in this year’s drafts and many analysts expect the franchise to bring in offensive tackle, Matt Kalil to fill a gaping hole in the roster.
However, general manager, Rick Spielman has still not ruled out moving down a few places with a trade so that the Vikings gain more picks later on and build the squad.
Speaking to the Star Tribune on Tuesday, Spielman said that calls inquiring about the pick have been increasing steadily and the Vikings will consider each option.
"That front has really heated up over the last 24 hours and I'm sure it will continue to heat up as we head for Thursday night."
The Vikings have been linked with three prospective talents in this year’s drafts which include cornerback, Morris Claiborne and wide receiver, Justin Blackmon in addition to Kalil.
All three will provide a big boost to a Vikings roster that ended up with a 3-13 record in the 2011-12 season.
Spielman went on to say that moving down a few places will still get the franchise the impact players they need.
“At our draft board and the depth of this board, we still think there’s a lot of good value in that first round if you go back X amount of spots and can still get an impact player.”
The Vikings need to improve significantly if they wish to get back to becoming relevant in the new season and some additional picks in this year’s drafts will not be a bad option for the franchise.
Spielman though went on to stress that he is not shopping the trade to other teams and he will remain patient and if the team receives a great offer they will go for the trade.
“I really believe in being patient and settling and seeing what comes to you. [We’re] not soliciting, going out there and making calls. There have been X amount of teams that have already started to call. Everything’s intriguing this time of year.”
The drafts are just two days away and will take place on Thursday. Indianapolis Colts and Washington Redskins will pick first and second respectively ahead of the Vikings.
