Minnesota Vikings GM Rick Spielman shares franchise's plans for third overall pick in drafts - NFL News
The first two picks in this year’s drafts are already done and dusted and so the attention will now turn to the third pick in the draft about which there is still some suspense left.
Indianapolis Colts have been confirmed to move for Stanford quarterback, Andrew Luck with their first pick which will leave the Washington Redskins with Baylor quarterback, Robert Griffin III.
The Minnesota Vikings hold the third pick in the drafts and have been heavily linked with University of Southern California (USC) left tackle, Matt Kalil.
However, on Thursday general manager, Rick Spielman went into detail with the
St. Paul Pioneer Press over the Vikings draft dealings.
Spielman said that the franchise have three prospects in mind and will reach a final decision by April 25th.
So who are the three players that the Vikings are considering.
Matt Kalil is one and he is joined by Louisiana State’s cornerback, Morris Claiborne and Oklahoma State’s wide receiver, Justin Blackmon.
These three are some of the most talented players available in the draft and Spielman went on to add that all three are equally rated by the Vikings and there will be heavy discussions over which of these prospects the franchise will pick at number three.
"What you're saying (to the staff) is: 'All these guys have equal ability.' What do you want? Do you want the receiver? Do you want the tackle? Do you want the corner?' "
The Vikings general manager also refused to rule out a trade with other franchises and said that he has received calls from teams who are looking to trade up, however, he has not yet reached a decision.
Ultimately though Spielman will make the call on the draft and it is a test for the general manager who took over the role on January 3rd.
"In the ultimate end, it's going to be how I feel about it. But I also have a lot bigger picture as far as where our roster is now, where our roster is next year, who we're playing against."
Kalil remains the favourite as he would come in immediately to fill a gaping hole in the Vikings roster but another wide receiver in Blackmon is also a great option for a team which is looking to get back on the up after ending last season with a 3-13 record.
