Minnesota Vikings general manager Rick Spielman will consider all options for draft - NFL News
Minnesota Vikings are looking to rebuild their team and strengthen the roster before the start of the new 2012-13 regular season as they look to improve on their poor performances in the outgoing season.
The Vikings hold the third pick in the drafts which will begin on April 26 after ending the 2011-12 season with just three wins and 13 losses.
General manager, Rick Spielman though is still not confirming whether the franchise will hold on to its third pick in the drafts (Indianapolis Colts and Washington Red Skins hold the first and second picks respectively) and in an interview with ProFootball
Weekly said that all options are on the table including trading the pick.
“I think once we get through our draft meetings and get our board finalized and get the coaches involved, we’ll have a pretty good idea of what we want to do,”
Adding further he said.
“If we want to get out of that pick, we’ll (determine) what it will take to get out of that pick. Plus you have to be careful of how far you would want to go back (down in the draft). You have to know what you’re looking at, depending on how far you go back.”
The Vikings could gain USC’s highly rated tackle Matt Kalil with the third round pick which will fulfil a major need of the franchise.
However, Spielman is looking at other prospects lower down the drafts and said that a trade deal could go down right to the 11th hour if there is a need.
“There are times we have been in (the war room) and we’ve done deals on the clock."
The Vikings struggled in the 2011-12 season for wins as both the offence and defence were hampered by injuries to key players.
Minnesota missed running back Adrian Peterson for long periods and rookie quarterback Christian Ponder also struggled to keep fit.
The Vikings just about managed to equal their worst season record as they ended up 3-13.
This year the franchise will be hoping to improve the rosters depth while also making sure that Ponder has the weapons to use his full range of talents.
