Minnesota Vikings get new proposal for stadium next to the Metrodome - NFL News
Another proposal has come up for the new Minnesota Vikings Stadium as their current lease of the Mall of America Metrodome comes closer to expiration.
The Vikings have been lobbying for a new stadium site throughout the current year and this new proposal will see them build a new facility right next to the Metrodome in what is currently a parking lot space.
This would keep the Vikings playing in the Metrodome for the time being before shifting to the newly constructed arena in 2016.
The Vikings are still looking into the feasibility of the new plan. The franchise will not have to move in to the TCF Bank Stadium of the University of Minnesota which will result in savings of approximately $ 50 million.
"It's the dome site proposal but shifting it," Bagley said. "The idea is to eliminate the three seasons we're playing at the university."
The Vikings have previously proposed moving into the Arden Hills' site, which is their preferred option, but state officials have put that proposal to bed since it would require raising taxes to come up with the funding.
Another site in downtown Minneapolis is also facing stiff resistance from leaders of a local church who believe that a stadium will result in problems for the worshippers.
The newest proposal is still being looked into and a funding package will have to be developed and later approved by the state senate.
The Minnesota Vikings lease of the Metrodome is close to ending and the franchise has for years wanted to move out of their current home since they feel that the revenues generated are not enough to compete with other National Football League (NFL) franchises.
The Vikings had a poor 2011-12 season under coach, Leslie Frazier as their team ended the regular season at the bottom of the National Football Conference (NFC) North division, with a poor 3-13 record.
Minnesota fans will hope that the franchise can find a location that is acceptable to all, and that the Vikings do not move out to another city, if they do not get their preferred plans approved soon.
