Minnesota Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier: Playing Adrian Peterson will be a game-time decision
The situation regarding fitness of Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson has taken another turn as head coach Leslie Frazier has said Peterson’s participation in the season opener will be a game-time decision.
Frazier announced the news on Thursday, August 30, 2012. He said that Peterson had shown improvement but there was still a long way to go. Frazier said:
"We've got a lot of things we want to get done with him this week, and I doubt that we would know without getting him through an entire week if we thought he was ready to play in a football game. We need to take him through some more things this week."
Frazier wants to analyse the physical condition of Peterson before taking any decision about his participation in the game.
The Vikings head coach has previously appreciated Peterson’s rapid recovery. Last week, Frazier said:
"Even the things he's doing in practice, there's nothing that makes you feel like you have to pull back just from watching him move around. But the more things we can give to him in the time we have leading up to the season opener the better."
Peterson was allowed to take the hits during Monday’s practice session. He was previously not allowed to be touched by the defensive team.
Peterson’s road to recovery has been a bit haphazard. Although doctors did not clear him to participate in the offseason training camp, Peterson has always reiterated that he is fit enough for practice.
Peterson got injured during Week 16 of the 2011 season against Washington Redskins. He got his knee injured during the game.
He was then diagnosed to have torn Anterior Cruciate Ligaments (ACL) and Medial Cruciate Ligaments (MCL) and had to go through a surgery.
The interesting thing to note is that Peterson has not been in live action for many months and has missed all of the Vikings’ preseason games. Therefore, putting him straightaway in the season opener might be a risky decision for the Vikings.
