Minnesota Vikings interested in acquiring Washington Redskins’ Donovan McNabb
A local newspaper in Washington, D.C., home of the Washington Redskins, reported that the Minnesota Vikings are one of the many teams that wish to acquire ‘Skins quarterback Donovan McNabb, according to two sources that are aware of the current situation
but wished to remain anonymous.
After it was made clear that McNabb had no future in Washington, the Vikes were one of the teams that were mentioned as a good place for the six-time Pro Bowl quarterback to start over. The ‘Skins have not confirmed that they will be getting rid of McNabb,
meaning that they will most likely not be getting a pompously lucrative offer for him.
No matter which team is or isn’t interested, nothing can be done about trading or re-signing players until a new collective bargaining agreement is reached between the league and the NFL Players Association (NFLPA).
While McNabb is expected to be released, Rex Grossman will become a free agent upon the installation of a new collective bargaining agreement. Grossman started in the last three games of the 2010 regular season and it is possible that the league may re-sign
him or sign another experienced quarterback. The newspaper also reported that McNabb is willing to return his signing bonus of $3.5 million just so he can be released from the team, meaning that neither ‘Skins head coach Mike Shanahan nor McNabb himself want
the former Philadelphia Eagles star quarterback to stay in Washington.
After Brett Favre retired and Tarvaris Jackson has not been playing well, the Vikes will most likely be looking for a new quarterback before the start of the 2011 season. Currently, Patrick Ramsey, Rhett Bomar and Joe Webb are listed as quarterbacks on the
team’s roster.
After spending 11 years with the Eagles, McNabb had a very difficult season adjusting to his new team, the Redskins. The 34-year-old quarterback started in 13 games and threw only 14 touchdowns, coupled with 15 interceptions. He also had his lowest quarterback
rating since his rookie season, with a low 77.1 rating. From those 13 starts, the Redskins have won only five games, while losing eight.
McNabb’s best game this season was in a loss to the Houston Texans. McNabb completed 29 of 38 passes attempted, a completion percentage of 73.7, for an astounding 426 yards and one touchdown. He averaged 11.2 yards per completion and was sacked three times
for a loss of 23 yards. He had a quarterback rating of 119.0 for that game.
McNabb’s arguably worst performance, statistically, was in win over the Chicago Bears in Week 7 of the regular season. Even though the Skins won that game, McNabb completed only 53.1% of his passes for 200 yards and only one touchdown. He was also intercepted
twice and sacked twice, earning a very low quarterback rating of 56.8.
