Minnesota Vikings look to give QB Christian Ponder more options in offence - NFL News
Minnesota Vikings are looking to rebuild their offence after ending the 2011-12 season with a poor 3-13 record and general manager Rick Spielman wants to give quarterback Christian Ponder the best players to make his plays.
Spielman, talking to the media on Thursday laid out the Vikings plans for the free agency and April’s draft telling reporters that the franchise will weigh up every available option.
"To give Christian the best chance at success is to get him around as many playmakers as we can on offense,"
The Vikings quarterback was hampered by injuries and lack of options in offence this season. Ponder had a poor debut season in the National Football League (NFL) since signing for the Vikings as a first round pick.
Ponder, passed for just 1,853 yards completing 158 out of 291 attempted passes for a completion rate of 54.3%. The 23-year-old made just 13 touchdowns this season.
The Vikings were not helped either in offence with star running back Adrian Peterson out injured for the majority of the year and without him in the line up Minnesota’s offence looked completely toothless.
Spielman shed light on Peterson’s progress to recovery by saying that the running back is on track and will be available for the new season.
"We've been very pleased,”
Spielman also discussed the franchise’s plans for the free agency in March and said that they will not be too active in the market as they concentrate on signing up their own players who will enter free agency while they concentrate on getting in players from the draft.
Although the general manager did not count out a big splash if there is need.
"Whether we make a big splash or not, if there's someone out there we think can help us then we're willing to spend a lot of money. We'll definitely look at those options,"
Minnesota this year just about managed to match their worst franchise record for the regular season as they ended up at 3-13.
With preparations for the new season about to start in earnest in the coming weeks, the franchise will be looking to make a bigger impact than they managed to in 2011-12.
