Minnesota Vikings not planning to trade Percy Harvin – NFL News
When it was learned that Minnesota Vikings’ versatile wide receiver Percy Harvin had sent a request for trade, it was not clear as to what were the reasons behind it.
On Wednesday, June 20, 2012, Harvin was present in the morning session of the offseason minicamp, having light walk-through practice, but he was nowhere to be seen in the whole afternoon session.
Vikings coach Leslie Frazier was present during the training session, but was absent in the press conference forcing general manager Rick Spielman to come forward and talk about this matter. He said:
"We have no interest at all in trading Percy Harvin. We drafted Percy Harvin here. He's a key part of our organization. He's a key part of our football team. Any issues that are out there, or reported, we always handle those internally, and we'll continue
to handle those internally."
Earlier, Harvin showed some reservations with Vikings about some issues which he did not specify in detail.
He said that he was not happy with various things and hoped to get them addressed before training camp which starts at the end of July.
"I just put it this way: There's a lot of different things that have to be sorted out," said Harvin. "Just haven't been really happy lately. We've got a couple of things to work on. I'm here in the classroom. We'll go from there."
Harvin is about to start his fourth year in a five-year deal which he signed in 2009. As per his current deal, he will get $915,000 this season.
Although he performed better than his veteran teammates like Michael Jenkins and Jerome Simpson, his pay is a lot less than them.
The news of Harvin’s trade request came as a shock to many of his teammates. His fellow player, running back Adrian Peterson, told reporters that he will talk to Harvin about these issues to make things better.
Harvin has been by far the most active and versatile player in Vikings squad. In the last season, he collected 87 passes covering 967 yards while scoring nine touchdowns.
He has played through his injuries for the team a few times. He even joined the offseason training programme when he was injured, urging other teammates to participate.
Other than money, there are other factors too which could have propelled Harvin to make the trade request.
The Vikings’ continuous slump in the National Football Conference (NFC) North getting two back-to-back last-place finishes, and Harvin’s role in the offence is also a factor that could have been fluttering in his mind.
Whether Vikings give Harvin a hefty contract or he plays for another team will only be determined during the next few weeks.
