Minnesota Vikings’ owner Zygi Wilf expects his team to be division champions this season – NFL News
Many analysts have already said that Minnesota Vikings will finish last in the National Football Conference (NFC) North in the 2012 season, but Vikings’ owner Zygi Wilf believes otherwise.
Talking to Judd Zulgad of 1500ESPN.com on Tuesday, July 31, 2012, Wilf said:
"I expect to be (NFC North) division champs. I want to be able to fight for the division, as we always did every year, and get better for years to come. That's always been our goal and it's been the goal since the first day I came here."
It is good to see an owner looking positive towards his team’s performance in the coming season, but it seems that the owner is asking for too much.
It may well be the case as Vikings are dealing with lot of problems right now. They were miserable last season as they finished 3-13.
The main reason for such a bad performance was their roster which has been going through rebuilding process since the last two seasons.
Their most important player running back Adrian Peterson is currently dealing with injury problems.
Moreover, they have a young starting quarterback Christian Ponder who will start his second season in the league. He struggled in his rookie season and uncertainty persists in him performing well this year.
Wilf did admit the fact that there will be some issues with his team regarding consistency this season. He said:
"Things don't happen overnight. There's going to be ups and downs, as we certainly have had them in the first seven years of ownership, but you have to be patient. As we were patient with the stadium, we're going to be patient and we're going to work hard
to getting a championship ballclub."
The most promising prospect on the Vikings’ roster is their star defensive end Jared Allen. He looks in prime form after a spectacular season last year in which he nearly broke the record of most sacks in a season after scoring a total of 22 sacks.
Wilf’s optimism could be alarming for Coach Leslie Frazier. He will have to do miracles to make this roster capable enough to reach the playoffs and fulfil the owner’s wish.
