Minnesota Vikings put running back Adrian Peterson on PUP list – NFL News
As expected, Minnesota Vikings have put their star running back Adrian Peterson on physically unable to perform (PUP) list.
Head coach Leslie Frazier announced the news on Friday, July 27, 2012. He said:
"We think that's the best thing to do for right now. We'll continue to evaluate him daily, see how he's progressing, and at some point, the doctors and our head trainer Eric Sugarman will come to me and say, 'Hey, we think he's ready to
get involved in some team activities.' But at this point, we're going to go through some evaluations, just make a determination as to when is the right time to put him out there with his teammates."
Now Peterson will have more time to recover from his injury he sustained around seven months ago.
Peterson injured his knee during a game against Washington Redskins in the 2011 season. After that, Peterson had a reconstructive surgery in order to repair the torn anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments of his left knee.
Peterson said on Thursday that he would fight to get his chance to train with his fellow teammates at training camp.
Although it does not affect Peterson’s main objective of playing in the first game of the season, this news should be demoralizing for him.
He had previously come out and said last month that his recovery was better than expected.
Frazier did admit that Peterson was desperate to get on the field. He said that he has made some plans for Peterson’s road to recovery before the start of the season. He said:
"He put up a fight. He did. He wants to get out there, but we've got to be smart.”
Vikings have the rights to take Peterson off the PUP list whenever they want. However, if he is unable to play throughout the training camp, he will be placed on the reserve/ PUP list. This will rule him out of first six weeks of the season.
Peterson went through some strengthening exercises on the first day of training camp. Vikings medical and coaching staff will be watching Peterson’s progress very closely.
During Peterson’s absence, Vikings will train with Toby Gerhart at running back as he is the primary backup of Peterson. He started a few games towards the end of last season during Peterson’s absence.
