Minnesota Vikings quarterback Brett Favre finally retires
The American NFL sensation, 41-year-old Brett Favre has finally bid farewell to the sport after playing it for nearly half of his life. Favre has been the ultimate iron man in the NFL for a little over 20 years. Having inspired players and coaches with his
unperturbed toughness and exciting fans with showmanship and enthusiasm, the once boisterous quarterback looked old and fragile in year number 20 than ever before. The magic of his career had to end sometime and Favre says that now is the time.
The 41-year-old did not play in the last game of the season against the Detroit Lions due to a concussion sustained earlier. Resultantly, Vikings could not prove their mettle in the absence of their power shield, losing to the Lions. The toughest guy in
the NFL ended his career on the bench with a third string rookie in his position, instead of fighting for yet another win for the Vikes.
Nobody, not even Favre, can play indefinitely.
"I know it's time, and that's OK. It is," Favre said after Sunday’s defeat. "Again, I hold no regrets, and I can't think of too many players offhand that can walk away and say that. Individually and from a team standpoint, it was way more than I ever dreamed
of."
The future Hall of Famer retired once in 2008 from the Green Bay Packers, and again in 2009 with the New York Jets, before the football bug bit him and he came back to adorn the sport once more. He acknowledges that there will be people who would doubt his
intentions.
"I don't know for me if it's ever easy," Favre said. "I'm sure throughout this year, the comment has been made that, 'We'll wait and see in August or September' and that's fine. It's time. I'm OK with it."
If this is really the end for the veteran quarterback, then the last season of his colourful career comes along with insults, injuries, and interceptions.
He was intercepted 19 times this season, even though he was out for three games and attempted no more than five passes in two others. His quarterback rating of 69.9 has been the lowest of his career. The Vikes fell to the lowest ranking in the NFC North
after starting the season with the Super Bowl as a goal. However, the season started off pretty badly with the Vikes losing their first two games and Favre throwing four interceptions in those two games; one in the first, three in the second one.
This is only the second time in his career that Favre’s team has had a losing season. He finished his press conference saying:
"I am truly grateful for the opportunity that, by the grace of God, I got a chance to play this game and play it at a high level and I'm honoured. I hope that people admired the way I played, my passion for it, because I hold no regrets."
