Minnesota Vikings sign-up Benny Sapp to cover secondary void – NFL News
Minnesota Vikings have signed cornerback Benny Sapp on a one year deal to cover the void in their secondary lineup left by the season ending neck injury to Antoine Winfield.
The Vikings secondary was severely depleted with the placing of Winfield on Injured Reserve as he undergoes neck surgery after getting injured during the 45-7 loss of the Vikings against Green Bay Packers on Monday. With their
other corner back Chris Cook facing charges of domestic violence against his girlfriend the Vikings were looking for a stop gap measure to fill the vacancy in their roster.
Benny Sapp was released by the Miami Dolphins at the start of the current National Football League season after the Dolphins loss to the New England Patriots and the veteran feared for his career given his age that no new opportunities
to play would come his way.
"There was a point in time I thought I wasn't going to play football again," Sapp said. "That was probably the lowest of my career."
As Sapp makes his comeback to a familiar locker room, it is a win-win situation for both Vikings and the player. The cornerback gets the opportunity to take the field for his old franchise once again where as the team gets the
much-needed backup for the its depleted secondary.
"I gave him a big hug when he got here this morning," linebacker Erin Henderson said. "We've been lobbying for him for a while now."
Benny Sapp was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in 2004 and after four seasons with the Chiefs signed for Minnesota Vikings in 2008. He left the Vikings for Miami Dolphins in 2010 but after just one season was released by the
Dolphins in the first week of the 2011 season.
He has played 103 NFL games in his career and made 214 tackles. Sapp was ecstatic to be back and is looking forward to the challenge as he will probably be in contention to start this Sunday against the Oakland Raiders.
"Now in my career, I think I'm capable of playing anywhere they need me to play," Sapp said. "I just hope I can bring that hard work and effort.”
