Question:

Minoring in Spanish?

I am a high school junior, and I want to be a pharmacist when I grow up. Pharmacy school is going to take about 6 years, and I also want to minor in a foreign language; probably Spanish. If I study Spanish in college, will I get to live in a Spanish-speaking country for a semester? All of the Spanish teachers at my school have said that they had to live in a country where they spoke Spanish for a certain amount of time to get their degree. Will I get to do this if I minor in Spanish, or is it just for people that want to be Spanish teachers?

  1. That all depends on the college/university.  Some require students majoring in Spanish to study abroad.  Some may require it for students minoring in Spanish.  You would have to check into the major/minor requirements of the school.  If the school does not require a study abroad program, people planning on becoming Spanish teachers generally travel abroad anyway, because it greatly helps their Spanish skills.

I think at the University I attend, it is "Highly recommended" that Spanish majors study abroad.

  2. That varies from school to school. Many people who minor in a language will be required to study abroad, but others at different schools may not.

If you're interested in studying abroad, find a college which offers it.

  3. It is very wise to study Spanish if you are to become a Pharmacist. As you know all those difficult names in Medicine and Pharmacy come from Latin=Spanish. So it will be so much easier for your classes in college if you aready knew some good Spanish. Great idea! Enroll this summer in an exchange program in Spain for a month duration so you will be ahead when you start college. There is this one that is so wonderful. Their host families are so well screened and are so loving and caring... Everyone that participated in this porgram returned raving about it and many went back a second summer! Check www.beautifulspain.com and ask them. Also, if you have requests as being placed in a specific host family type, they will take care of you.
