Question:

Minority Quarterbacks?

Alright a couple of minutes ago i started thinking about the NFL and it's QB's. I thought to myself, dang there has never really been a dominant minority QB in the league, well at least not until recent years that is. Yet they have not been as good as say Elway, Marino, Favre, Montana, Bradshaw etc. All great QB's have been white, yet all great RB,WR,LB,DE etc. have been black. Well at least for the most part. Why would that be?

  1. First off Doug Williams did much more than just win the "Big Game"...he turned around the Bucks in the early years if you know your football history.  And to forget Warren Moon is to not know the history of football at all.  But if you want to know why historically there are fewer black quarterback you need look no further than why Williams was run out of Tampa after taking them to the playoffs.  Black quarterbacks had been looked down on, not given the opportunities and considered less qualified for the job.  The reality is that they posses all the skill set as the people you named, and in most cases also have the ability to gain yardage with there legs.  Unfortunately, the NFL looks at these same black QB's out of college and instead of hearing that story of the 6 round pick becomes a great pro QB with development and time the story you hear 9 times out of 10 is the organization converted him to a WR or return man...that's why blacks don't have as many QB's today.  It comes down to opportunity.

  2. look up Warren Moon s stats; in the past the NFL stereotyped black quarterbacks.  also Doug Williams won the super bowl for the Washington Redskins, and THE LAST DOMINANT quarterback Pits burg had was black.

  3. You want to know the real reason, just look at any little league team, or HS team, for that matter. The best white athletes are put at QB and Oline, sometimes MLB, and the best black athletes are put at running back, WR, or corner. With Moon and Cunningham, among others, the little league coaches started to sometimes put their best athletes at QB, and now we are seeing a lot more of them. Also, coaches think of black qbs as runners first, which stunts their growth as a passer. Guys like Elway could run with the best of them, but were seen as a passer, where as guys like Cunningham, who had an Elway like arm, was seen as a runner first until he hit the NFL.

Track and field is the same way. My brother ran as fast a 100 time as anyone on his team when he was young, but they still stuck him in the 400/800 and even tried to get him to run the mile. The black kids that ran the same times were put in the 100/200.

So to answer your question, racism, one way or another.

  4. That is just the way things are

  5. Warren Moon stacks up with anyone.  If you combine his CFL and NFL records he may have been the best QB ever.  Look it up.

  6. Warren Moon was a great quarterback.

Doug Williams won a real big game.

Micheal Vick went to jail. for being stupid

    Mickey Mouse has big ears.

Thats my opinion.  But mom always said opinions are like @$$ holes everyones got one.

What do you want someone to say?

    I don't see your point.

If you make it to the pro's you did something special!

We are all people of color, lets stop making a deal of it.

    Talent is talent.

    Go Jamarcus Go!!

  7. The NFL has an image of what a quarterback should be.  While "white" may or may not be part of the image, it does seem to fall out that way.

Typically NFL teams want a tall (6'3" or taller), rifle-armed thrower who can stand in the pocket.  Most black quarterbacks have been more athletic and willing to scramble to make plays.  NFL coaches have a hard time dealing with that difference and as a result try to change the way these guys play, instead of trying to use the abilities of these QB's to the fullest.  Someone who is different from the prototype often struggles to get deserved opportunities.

Minority quarterbacks have been dominant for years in the CFL, where they don't have such a strict concept of what a quarterback should be.

  8. Think of it in percentages.  There's a much higher percentage of black quarterbacks to win a superbowl than white quarterbacks (if that's how you would define "great").

And Warren Moon is definitely one of the greatest QBs of all time.  He's definitely in my top 10.

  9. Generally you need to be pretty smart to be a QB.

  10. black people are faster and more agile.

while white people are stronger, and indefiantly more skilled.

[dont forget Romo is a great QB]

  11. It has nothing to do with skin color, it has everything to do with who has the best ability to perform at a high level in those positions.  It's survival of the fittest in the NFL.

  12. This will probably be considered racist, but its probably because Qb have to be the smartest player on the field...

Speed is overrated for Qbs. Helpful sure, but overated. Its more about agility. Romo, Brady and Manning are not fast Qbs but they have the sense in the pockets that is needed. I think more white people are blessed with this then black. Just as more blacks are blessed with raw speed jumping ability.

  13. I have no answer for you except that David Garrard of the Jaguars should be an up in comming star in the NFL this year... watch out!

  14. for the same reason the great sprinters are black. while there are exceptions, certain genotypes have superior abilities in certain areas.

that is just the way it is. think about how great chinese are at ping pong, building things and stuff. you can think of many other examples, i am sure. evolution and the spread of mankind across the globe resulted in differences and tribal diversities that helped them survive and endure.

visualization, conceptual thinking, keeping a calm head as well as a strong throwing arm are essential to conistent success as an nfl qb. probably, no one of these great qbs would make a decent running back or wide receiver. it is really easy to understand, don't you think?

(afterthought, of the other "great apes" one silverback gorilla could toss the whole starting team of the NY Giants champs into the stands and bite the football in half. No doubt about it. So humans should not be too proud about their superiority in any area.)

  15. I think its all in what one strives to be. I think now more African Americans want the position of Quarter Back as well as being a Running Back or a receiver.  Just like the NC State swimmer! who just proved you don't have to be white to be a great swimmer.  Sometimes the opportunity is just not there, and you have to make one.
