Mira Costa Girls’ beach volleyball teams opens inaugural season – Volleyball news
The Mira Costa Girls beach volleyball teams, commonly known as the Mustangs, opened their inaugural season on Saturday.
The pairing of Katie Warshaw and Lan Nguyen represented Mira Costa 1, while Skylar Caputo and Keala Rusher played under the tag of Mustang 2. They opened the season by playing non-league matches, where they faced off the opponents from Palos Verdes.
In the first match, the tandem of Warshaw and Lan Nguyen took on the top team from Palos Verdes. Bryce Bark and Keaton Alley of Palos Verdes gave a good competition to Mira Cost players but finally acknowledged the better status of Mustangs. Warshaw/ Nguyen
posted 2-0 (21-12, 21-13) to claim victory.
Following their footsteps, Skylar Caputo and Keala Rusher of Mira Cost defeated second team of Palos Verdes, which consisted of Sam Hunter and Claire Garrison. They also finished the match in straight sets of 2-0 (21-11, 21-14).
The Mustangs performed brilliantly and proved their ability to be considered as the Southern Pacific Girls’ IBVL (Interscholastic Beach Volleyball League), which is presented by the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU). The inaugural matches were played at the Dockweiler
State Beach. The successful Mustangs were joined by other winners from El Segundo, Marymount and Valencia.
The AAU Beach Volleyball Commissioner Gino Grajeda stated, “Having specialized in junior beach volleyball competition for more than 20 years, we are looking forward to the upcoming season for our local high school athletes competing this season and providing
an opportunity to participate in the newest NCAA sports. The birthplace of the sport took place right here on the beaches of Southern California, it is only fitting that we also inaugurate the first interscholastic beach volleyball league.”
In the next run, the Mustangs of Mira Costa will return to action on Saturday, March 24. They will continue with their quest for their first title. They will be challenged by teams from Marymount and Marlborough. Furthermore, Mira Cost will meet Carson and
Valencia on March 31.
El Segundo and Harvard-Westlake are scheduled to meet Mustangs in the next month of April. Both teams are determined to continue with success in the upcoming matches.
