Mira Costa/Manhattan Beach sweeps Simi Valley High boys volleyball team on Thursday
Simi Valley High boys volleyball team could not get the desired result as they played the second round of the CIF-Southern Section Division playoffs.
The host team was up against Mira Costa/Manhattan Beach on Thursday, which is the top ranked team in the state. Once again, the number one team was able to assert their dominance by defeating the number fourth ranked team in a clean sweep.
Not only were the Mustangs able to win the match by bagging three consecutive sets, they made an easy deal out of defeating Simi Valley. The Mustangs did not take long in smothering Simi Valley in each set of the game. By the time that the Mustangs were
celebrating their flawless win by giving hoots of joy and Simi Valley was heading out of their own court with slumped shoulders, the scoreboard read the final scores as 25-14, 25-16 and 25-18.
With their recent loss, the Pioneers now tally a total of 11 defeats in their overall season record. In comparison, the number of times that Simi Valley has managed to win a match amounts to be 17. As opposed to the performance statistics of Simi Valley,
the Mustangs show a much better overall season record. They have been able to improve their total number of wins to a figure of 25. These victories have been bagged after keeping their number of defeats impressively minimal. The Mustangs have had just one
loss so far.
The first set of the game started off with both the teams almost neck to neck with each other. Despite the fact that the Mustangs were able to take the lead later on, the Pioneers kept on trailing close behind.
During the middle of the game, the score was 17-14 in favour of the Mustangs. Unfortunately for the Pioneers, they could not post any more points during the first set of the game as the Mustangs made a 11 point run that enabled them to bag the initial set
at 25-14.
Similarly, the start of the second set of the game saw tough competition between the two sides. Simi Valley kept close by with the Mustangs at a leading position at 15-11. The Mustangs did not let go of their advantage and secured the second set as well
at 25-16.
After that, it was only a matter of time before the Mustangs would win the third set at 25-18.
“You know, we played our first-round game so good,” said Simi Valley coach Justin Sinn. “No one’s expecting us to even get this far. So I’m so proud of the guys to make it past that first round. Mira Costa’s such a good team, very level. I do think we did
play them well. We made a few too many mistakes, more mistakes than you can afford to make against Mira Costa.”
