Miranda, Monteiro, Kennedy and Standlick shine at Quiksilver Saquarema Prime – Surfing news
Brazil’s Bernardo Miranda, his compatriot Raoni Monteiro, Australia’s Stu Kennedy and his fellow countryperson Perth Standlick emerged triumphant in their respective Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 2013 Quiksilver Saquarema Prime presented by
Coca Cola.
The second ASP Prime event of the season kicked-off at Itauna beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Wednesday, May 22, 2013.
The event organisers had kept the competition on hold on Tuesday due to what they deemed as unsatisfactory condition.
With four-to-six foot waves on offer at the main event site on Wednesday, the Round of 96 heats got underway.
The first heat of the competition pitted Miranda against Hawaii’s Ezekiel Lau, Australia’s Lincoln Taylor and Chile’s Manuel Selman in a four-man battle for the Round of 48 spot.
None of the four surfers looked too comfortable in the conditions on hand, but Miranda eventually managed to finish on top after collecting a 6.37 and 5.83-point ride to finish with a heat-total of 12.20 points.
He was accompanied into the next round by Lau, who secured second place with a two-wave total of 11.73 points.
The second heat saw Kennedy get the better of fellow countryperson Garrett Parkes, Brazil’s Caio Ibelli and Canary Island’s Jonathan Gonzalez to make his way through into the next round.
The Australian surfer made his way to victory with a heat-total of 14.93 points, which included a 7.93 and 7.00-point ride.
Ibelli successfully extended his life in the event as well after registering a two-wave total of 13.50 points.
2013 ASP World Championship Tour contender Monteiro enjoyed a successful outing on the first active day of the competition as well.
Scoring a 7.17 and 4.77 off his top-two waves for a heat-total of 11.94 points, the Brazilian surfer managed to get the better of Australia’s Davey Cathels, America’s Andrew Doheny and Basque County’s Hodei Collazo.
Cathels managed to ensure his survival in the competition as well after finishing in second place with a heat-total of 11.67 points.
The fourth heat saw Standlick register a two-wave total of 14.20 points, which comprised of a couple of waves in the seven-point range, to finish on top of Brazil’s Alejo Muniz, his compatriot Alex Ribeiro and America’s Nathaniel Curran.
Muniz accompanied the winner of the heat into the Round of 48 after finishing with a heat-total of 9.60 points, which proved sufficient to earn him second place.
