  1. My preference is the large chromed mics that look like something from the mid 1950's. They are solid, durable, and reliable. You can get them through musicians friend on the web.

  2. Shure's SM58 is industry standard, has a great sound and is pretty much indestructible - ours get a h**l of a lot of abuse and just keep going.

  3. We need a bit more info...like how do you plan to record the music (computer, DAT, other)? What kind of instruments? What quality are you looking for?

One of the best all-around mics for years has been the Shure SM58. It will last for decades if you take care of it, and it has a nice sound. It is one of the industry standards for an all-purpose mic.

Getting the best sound means buying mics that are specific to your instruments (drums, horns, voice, etc), but that is obviously expensive. Take a look at Shure.com...they have a great FAQ and knowledge database that should get you started.
