Question:

Mirena (IUD) Advice??

I have a Mirena IUD and have had it since Feb 06'. I am wondering how long it takes to conceive after removing the device. I asked my doc, but he said anywhere from instantly to 9 months... I am all about planning and was hoping I could get a good idea by people that have actually used it... He just started prescribing it, so he was unsure really. Any help would be awesome! Thanks!!

  1. Your doctor is right..some can get pregnant right away, where others will take some time. My friend was on the shot and her doctor said she could expect for it to take up to 18 months and she got pregnant within 4 months after being on the shot for over a year! I will say though...I would NEVER use the Mirena IUD. The person above me listed one of the exact reasons why I would NEVER use that form of birth control. The risk of having the IUD perforate your uterus or embedding itself can rob you of your future fertility.

  2. The question was not whether or not to use this form of bc, but rather about conceiving after removing it. Please use your "knowledge" to an answer the question at hand.

I have had the Mirena in for just a little of two years. I just had it removed this week, and I'm trying very diligently to conceive. I'm sorry the question will run out before I can tell you my experience.

However, an acquantice of mine just had her baby today. She likewise had it in for two years and conceived about four months after having it removed.

P.S. Any form of bc comes with risks or benefits! :)

  3. My friend got pregnant about 4 months after having hers removed.  She had to have hers removed though - it had perforated her uterus, and she still managed to conceive!

  4. I would advise you to never use that method of BC again for your safety, here is a little piece plus the web site of what I found.  You cannot truly plan for a child...well unless you use the Natural Family Planning method.  Then you will know exactly when you are ovulating to get pregnant and when not to have intimacy when you don't want to get pregnant.  All the best for you and your husband.

    Ectopic Pregnancy

Evaluate women who become pregnant while using Mirena for ectopic pregnancy. Up to half of pregnancies that occur with Mirena in place are ectopic. The incidence of ectopic pregnancy in clinical trials that excluded women with risk factors for ectopic pregnancy was about 1 ectopic pregnancy per 1000 users per year.

Tell women who choose Mirena about the risks of ectopic pregnancy, including the loss of fertility. Teach them to recognize and report to their physician promptly any symptoms of ectopic pregnancy. Women with a previous history of ectopic pregnancy, tubal surgery or pelvic infection carry a higher risk of ectopic pregnancy.

The risk of ectopic pregnancy in women who have a history of ectopic pregnancy and use Mirena is unknown. Clinical trials of Mirena excluded women with a history of ectopic pregnancy.
