Mirjam de Koning-Peper clinches Women’s 50m freestyle gold – 2012 Paralympic Games
Mirjam de Koning-Peper of Netherlands clinched gold medal of the Women’s 50m freestyle in S6 category on sixth day of the swimming events at the 2012 London Paralympic Games in Aquatics Centre on Tuesday, September 4.
Koning-Peper served notice of her talent in the shortest freestyle event and proved her mettle for gold medal of the event. She continued her nerve-wrecking form throughout the event and outsmarted her opponents over the finishing end for gold medal.
With her commendable efforts, she remained half body length ahead of her strongest challenger and occupied gold medal of the race by producing an incredible time of 34.77 seconds.
The gold medallist was chased by Victoria Arlen of USA, who stayed 0.55 seconds away from upsetting her former finisher and hit the wall with a wonderful timing of 35.32 seconds for silver medal.
Arlen was followed by Eleanor Simmonds of Great Britain, who stayed nearly 0.75 seconds behind and clocked a timing of 36.11 seconds for bronze medal.
Fourth position of the race was obtained by Tanja Groepper of Germany, who stayed 0.17 seconds apart and settled on the finishing blockade by reporting a time of 36.28 seconds.
Similarly, Groepper stayed 0.49 seconds ahead of Oksana Khrul of Ukraine, who emerged on the finishing end as fifth best finisher and clocked a time of 36.77 seconds.
Khrul was chased by Noga Nir-Kistler of USA, who suffered a loss of 0.06 seconds from her foregoing finisher and completed her race in sixth best place by touching the wall with an effort of 36.83 seconds.
Subsequently, Nir-Kistler was traced by Olena Fedota of Ukraine, who remained 0.32 seconds apart and finished seventh in the event by clocking a time of 37.15 seconds.
Fedota remained 0.80 seconds ahead of Ozlem Baykiz of Turkey, who was unable to overpower any of her opponents in the event and concluded her swim in eighth best place by clocking a time of 37.95 seconds.
In addition, Koning-Peper was overjoyed with her accomplishment in the event and expressed her desire of working hard and continuing her dominance at the upcoming swimming tournaments.
